Introduction: Welcome to Brookhollow Park 🌳
Shrunk Again, But Wiser 🐜
Hey there, survivor! 👋 You’re back, and you’re tiny again. This time, you’re not in the backyard anymore. You’ve been dropped into the huge, wild world of Brookhollow Park. 🗺️ This guide isn’t just a to-do list; it’s here to teach you the why behind every move. To really own this park, you need to think like a survivor. Every leaf you pick up, every wall you build, and every bug you fight should be part of your grand plan. Let’s turn you from a tiny tourist into the ruler of this miniature kingdom! 👑
What is Grounded 2? 🤔
Grounded 2 is an open-world survival adventure you can play by yourself or with up to three friends online. 🤝 Developed by Obsidian Entertainment and Eidos-Montréal, this game is massive—the map is three times bigger than the first game’s! Your main goals are to explore, gather goodies, craft awesome gear, and build a base, all while trying not to get eaten by giant bugs. 🐛
It’s all about survival and crafting with a big dose of action-RPG fun. You won’t be managing empires or armies here. Instead, you’ll focus on keeping yourself (and your friends) alive, customizing your character with a super flexible archetype system, and figuring out the mystery of why you all got shrunk again! 🤷
A Note on Early Access 📢
Just a heads-up! This guide is based on the Early Access version of the game that launched on July 29, 2025. 📅 This version has the first part of the story, a big chunk of the park to explore, two rideable “Buggies,” and the basic character-building system. Since it’s in Early Access, things will change and get updated over time. 🚧 We’ve also peeked at the official developer roadmap, so this guide should stay helpful as the game grows!
Chapter 1: Your First 24 Hours: From Lost to Landed 😬
Your first day in the park is a huge test. What you do in these first few hours sets you up for everything that comes later. This chapter will take you from feeling totally vulnerable to being prepped and in control.
The Golden Rules of Day One ✨
To win the early game, you’ve gotta focus on the right stuff. Stick to these key rules, and you’ll have a solid start.
- Follow the Missions 🙏The main story quests at the beginning are your best friend. They’re not just for the story; they’re a giant, step-by-step tutorial. They’ll walk you through crafting your first workbench, getting vital Omni-Tool upgrades, and even snagging your first rideable Buggy. Seriously, just do the quests. It’s the fastest way to get what you need to survive.
- Analyze Everything 🔬The Resource Analyzer at every Ranger Station is how you get stronger. Every new thing you find—a plant fiber, some mite fuzz, a part from a bug you defeated—needs to be analyzed. Scanning a resource unlocks new crafting recipes and gives you “Brainpower.” Leveling up your Brainpower unlocks even more advanced recipes. If you forget to analyze stuff, you’ll hit a wall, fast.
- Stay Hydrated and Fed 💧🍖You’ve gotta keep an eye on your hunger and thirst meters. If either one bottoms out, you’ll get nasty debuffs like having less stamina, which can get you smooshed in a fight.
- Thirst: The best clean water comes from dew drops on grass blades. Knock ’em down with a tool or a pebblet and slurp ’em up. Whatever you do, do not drink from dirty puddles! You’ll get sick. 🤢
- Hunger: You can hunt harmless critters like Aphids and Weevils. Cook their meat on a Roasting Spit for a good meal. Just remember that cooked food can spoil!
- Fear the Dark 👻When night falls around 8 PM (20:00), it gets dark. Like, can’t-see-your-hand-in-front-of-your-face dark. Even worse, nasty predators like Wolf Spiders come out to play. 🐺🕷️ For a newbie with basic gear, going out at night is a really bad idea. Your best bet is to craft a Lean-To (a bed), which lets you sleep through the night and also sets your respawn point.
Mastering the Omni-Tool: Your New Best Friend 🛠️
One of the best new things in Grounded 2 is the Omni-Tool. It’s an axe, hammer, and shovel all in one upgradable package! This is a game-changer because it saves you three precious inventory slots 🎒 and you don’t have to keep switching tools to chop, smash, or dig.
Upgrading your Omni-Tool is super important for progressing in the game. You’ll need better versions to harvest tougher resources like sturdy weeds or clay. The first story quests will show you how to get your first upgrades, which usually cost some Raw Science points and specific bug parts. Make upgrading this tool a top priority!
Your First Base: Location, Location, Location 🏡
Your base is your command center. Where you build it can make a huge difference, especially early on.
The absolute best spot for your first base is right next to the first Ranger Station you find. 📡 Why? Because Ranger Stations have the Resource Analyzer and the Omni-Tool upgrader, so you won’t have to travel far to progress. They also have a water cooler for clean drinks and often have free stuff like bandages and granola bars. Plus, the area around them is usually flat and safe, making building way easier.
To start building, you’ll need to analyze a Grass Plank and a Weed Stem. This unlocks basic floors and walls. Your first building priorities should be a Lean-To (to set your respawn), a Workbench (for more crafting recipes), and a few Storage Chests (to stay organized).
Early-Game Threats & Combat Primer ⚔️
You need to learn who’s who in the bug world. Some insects are aggressive and will attack you on sight (like Lawn Mites and spiders), while others are neutral and will leave you alone unless you bother them (like Ladybugs and Red Worker Ants).
Your most important combat tool is the PEEP.R. 👀 By “peeping” a creature from a safe distance, you can scan it to learn its specific weaknesses and resistances to different damage types (Smashing 🔨, Stabbing 🔪, Slashing ⚔️) and elements (Fresh ❄️, Spicy 🔥, Sour 🍋). Using these weaknesses against them is the secret to winning fights easily.
Table: Early-Game Creature Dossier 🐞
Here’s a quick guide to the first bugs you’ll probably meet.
Creature | Behavior | Weakness(es) | Resistance(s) | Location | Drops |
Aphid 🍃 | Harmless | None | None | Grassy areas | Raw Aphid Meat |
Weevil 👃 | Harmless | None | None | Grassy areas | Raw Weevil Meat, Weevil Nose |
Gnat 🦟 | Harmless | None | None | Near water | Gnat Fuzz, Raw Gnat Meat |
Lawn Mite 💥 | Aggressive | Stabbing 🔪 | None | Grassy areas | Mite Fang, Mite Dust |
Red Worker Ant 🐜 | Neutral | Stabbing 🔪, Spicy 🔥 | None | Anthills, Snackbar | Red Ant Head, Red Ant Part |
Chapter 2: The Archetype Doctrine: Forging Your Identity 🦸
Grounded 2 has a super cool and flexible way to customize your character called Archetypes. But don’t worry, these aren’t stiff “classes” you’re locked into forever. An archetype is just a playstyle you can change whenever you want just by swapping your gear. This lets you adapt to any challenge the park throws at you! 🤸
The Philosophy of Fluid Combat 🌊
There’s no class selection screen here. Your combat role is defined by how you mix and match three things: your Armor Set, your Weapon, and your active Mutations. This means you can be a tough, frontline Warrior one minute, then run back to your base, swap to light armor and daggers, and instantly become a sneaky Rogue. This freedom is what makes the system so awesome!
The Four Pillars of Survival: Core Archetypes 💪
While you can create tons of hybrid builds, the game is built around four main combat styles. Get to know these, and you’ll be a pro at creating your own builds.
- The Warrior (Tank) 🛡️The Warrior is the team’s protector. Your job is to take hits and keep the big, scary bugs focused on you so your squishier friends can do damage safely. You’re great at controlling crowds with heavy, stunning weapons.
- Core Gear: Heavy armor like the Ladybug Armor is perfect. It’s tough and even heals you when you block! You’ll use one-handed weapons like Clubs 🔨 or Swords 🗡️ with a sturdy Shield.
- Key Mutations: Smasher (more stun with clubs), Blade Master (weakens enemies with swords), and Parry Master (gives you stamina on perfect blocks) are all top-tier choices.
- The Ranger (Ranged DPS) 🏹The Ranger is a master of fighting from a distance. You pick off enemies before they can even get close.
- Role: Your job is to deal consistent damage from afar. You can scout ahead, take out key targets, and weaken big enemies from a safe distance.
- Core Gear: Medium armor like Grub Armor or Bee Armor 🐝 gives a good balance of protection and stamina. Your main weapons are Bows and Greatbows. Spears are also great since you can throw them!
- Key Mutations: Sharpshooter is a must-have for bow users, as it boosts your critical hit chance. If you like throwing spears, Javelineer is the way to go.
- The Rogue (Stealth/Burst DPS) 🥷The Rogue is a speedy assassin who relies on hit-and-run tactics and massive bursts of damage.
- Role: You’re an opportunist. You flank enemies, hit their weak spots, and apply nasty effects like venom and bleed. You take out important targets while the Warrior keeps the heat off you.
- Core Gear: Light armor is key for speed and stamina. Orb Weaver Armor 🕷️ is awesome because it boosts your critical hit chance. Your best friends are fast, dual-wielded weapons like Daggers.
- Key Mutations: Assassin is your core mutation, making your critical hits do even more damage. Pair it with Ambush, which guarantees a critical hit when you attack from stealth for a huge opening blow.
- The Mage (Elemental/AoE) 🪄The Mage is a unique style that uses special staves to control the battlefield with elemental magic.
- Role: Mages specialize in area-of-effect (AoE) damage and weakening groups of enemies. You can burn them with Sizzle 🔥 or slow them down with Chill ❄️, which is a massive help to your team.
- Core Gear: You’ll wear light armor that boosts your elemental powers, like the Butterfly Armor 🦋. Your only weapons are the different elemental staves you can find.
- Key Mutations: Whittle Wizard is the most important mutation for a Mage, as it makes your Sizzle and Chill effects much stronger. Defensive mutations like Spicy Safety and Fresh Defense are also super helpful.
Hybrid Warfare: The Art of the Mix 🧪
The real fun begins when you start mixing and matching gear from different archetypes to create hybrid builds. Since you’re never locked in, you can get creative!
This is especially great for solo players who need to do everything themselves. For example, you could be a “Tank Mage” by wearing the tough Ladybug Armor (Warrior) while using an elemental Staff (Mage). You’ll be super hard to kill while still slinging spells. Or, you could be a “Stealth Ranger” by using the light Orb Weaver Armor (Rogue) with a Bow (Ranger) to deal incredible damage with your first shot from hiding. The possibilities are endless, so experiment and find what works for you!
Chapter 3: Unlocking Your Potential: A Complete Mutation Guide ✨
Mutations are your superpowers! These passive perks are what really make your character build unique. Understanding how to unlock, upgrade, and combine them is the key to taking on the toughest bugs in the park.
Mutation Mechanics 101 💡
You don’t just pick mutations from a list; you earn them by doing things. For example, if you defeat a bunch of creatures with a club, you’ll eventually unlock the Smasher mutation. 🔨
Most mutations have three phases you can upgrade them to. Each phase makes the mutation even better. For example, you might unlock Phase 1 of a weapon mutation after 40 kills, Phase 2 after 100 kills, and the super-powerful Phase 3 after 200 kills. 📈
You start with only two active mutation slots, but you can find a rare resource called Milk Molars hidden around the park to increase this up to five. This means you have to make smart choices about which mutations to use for each situation.

Strategic Synergies: Building for Power 🤝
Mutations are great on their own, but they’re even better when you combine them!
- Warrior Synergy 🔨 + 🤺A classic tank combo is Smasher and Parry Master. Smasher helps you stun enemies with your club, and Parry Master gives you stamina back every time you perfect block. This lets you block hits, get stamina, and then dish out stunning blows, controlling the fight completely.
- Rogue Synergy 🥷 + 🤫The best combo for a Rogue is Assassin and Ambush. Ambush guarantees your first attack from stealth is a critical hit, and Assassin makes that crit do a ridiculous amount of damage. A well-geared Rogue can often one-shot enemies before they even know what hit them.
- Universal Utility ⭐Some mutations are so good that almost any build can use them. Cardio Fan is amazing for everyone because more stamina is always better. In co-op, having at least one person with Reliable Friend is a lifesaver, as a fast revive can prevent a team wipe.
Chapter 4: The Art of Combat: A Tactician’s Guide ⚔️
Fighting in Grounded 2 is all about timing, patience, and preparation. You can’t just run in swinging! A real master knows the dance of offense and defense and how to use every creature’s weaknesses against it.
The Core Principles: Offense and Defense 🛡️
Every fight is about managing your defense while looking for a chance to attack.
- Perfect Blocking (Parrying) 🤺This is the most skillful defensive move. If you time your block just right, you’ll negate 100% of the damage and add a ton to the enemy’s stun gauge. Light shields are great for parrying because they add bonus stun. Mastering this timing will make you a much better fighter.
- Standard Blocking 🛡️For attacks that are too fast to parry, just holding your block is a safe bet. It will reduce the damage you take but will cost you stamina. Heavy shields are built for this, as they can block all damage and are more stamina-efficient.
- Dodging 🤸Grounded 2 has a new dodge move! It’s a quick dash that makes you invincible for a split second. This is the only way to avoid some unblockable attacks. If you’re using a bow, dodging will be your main way to stay safe.
- Stamina Management 😮💨Stamina is everything in a fight. Attacking, blocking, dodging, and sprinting all use it. If you run out of stamina while blocking, your guard will break, and you’ll be stunned and helpless. So, always keep an eye on your stamina bar!
Offensive Maneuvers 💥
Here’s how to hit back—and hit back hard.
- Combos ComboMost melee weapons have a three-hit combo. The first two hits are normal, but the third hit does a big chunk of bonus damage. Always try to finish your combos when you can to maximize your damage.
- Charge Attacks 💪You can hold the attack button to charge up a powerful strike. It’s slow and uses a lot of stamina, but it’s the best way to break an enemy’s guard. If a bug is blocking your attacks, a charged hit will shatter its defense and leave it wide open.
Know Your Enemy: Exploiting Weaknesses 🧠
This is the most important rule of combat: use enemy weaknesses! Almost every creature has a specific set of things it’s weak or resistant to.
Attacking a bug with a damage type it’s weak to will do way more damage. Using a weapon it resists will feel like you’re hitting it with a wet noodle. For example, a Ladybug is weak to Smashing 🔨 but resists Stabbing 🔪. Trying to fight it with a spear will be a long, tough battle. But switch to a club, and you’ll flatten it in no time.
This means you need to be prepared. Before a big fight, use your PEEP.R to scan the enemy and learn its weaknesses. Having a variety of weapons with different damage types isn’t just a good idea—it’s essential.
Chapter 5: The Survivor’s Arsenal: Ultimate Gear & Weapon Loadouts 👕
You’re only as good as your gear. In Grounded 2, your weapons and armor define your playstyle. Let’s look at the key gear sets you can get in Early Access.
Tier I: The Foundation 🌱
This is the gear that will get you through your first few days.
- Armor:
- Acorn Armor 🌰: A heavy set that’s great for early-game defense. Perfect for new Warriors.
- Red Ant Armor 🐜: A balanced medium set that helps with hauling stuff. Very versatile.
- Grub Armor 🐛: A light set with stamina bonuses, ideal for mobile Rangers or Rogues.
- Weapons:
- Pebblet Spear 🗿: An easy-to-make Stabbing weapon for dealing with Lawn Mites.
- Red Ant Club 🐜🔨: Your first real Smashing weapon for a Warrior build.
- Sprig Bow 🌿: Your first ranged weapon, essential for any Ranger.
Tier II: Specialization ⭐
Once you explore more dangerous areas, you’ll find materials for powerful Tier II gear.
- Armor:
- Ladybug Armor 🐞 (Warrior): The best Tier II tank set. It’s super tough and heals you when you block!
- Orb Weaver Armor 🕷️ (Rogue): Perfect for Rogues. It boosts your critical hit chance with every hit.
- Bee Armor 🐝 (Ranger): A great medium set for bow users with helpful ranged combat bonuses.
- Butterfly Armor 🦋 (Mage): This light armor is made for Mages, with bonuses that work perfectly with Fresh damage and dodging.
- Weapons:
- Stinger Spear 🐝: A powerful spear upgrade for Javelineer builds.
- Mosquito Needle 🦟: A fast sword that heals you as you deal damage. This is an amazing weapon, especially for solo players.
- Roach Club 🪳: A stronger club with more damage and stun for Warriors.
- Spider Stringer 🕸️: A Tier II bow that deals a lot more ranged damage.
The Upgrade Path: Why Smithing Matters 🛠️
Your gear has both Tiers and Levels. Tiers are big jumps in power that require rare materials. Leveling up your gear (from +1 to +3 for now) is done at a Smithing Station with more common materials like Brittle Whetstones (for weapons) and Brittle Plating (for armor).
You might go a long time without finding the materials for a new Tier of gear. During that time, leveling up your current gear is essential. A fully upgraded Level 3 Tier I weapon can be better than a basic Level 1 Tier II weapon. Don’t neglect your Smithing Station! ⬆️
Chapter 6: The Buggy System: Taming the Wilds 🐜💨
The biggest new feature in Grounded 2 is the Buggy system! You can hatch, raise, and ride your own insect buddies. 🐛 These mounts are more than just a ride; they’re vital tools for combat, hauling, and exploring. Some areas are even impossible to reach without a Buggy!
Hatching Your First Ally: The Hatchery 🐣
You get all your Buggies from the Hatchery, a special station that incubates eggs. 🥚 You’ll unlock the recipe for it through the main story. Once you build it, you’ll need to find an egg for the Buggy you want to hatch.
Place the egg in the Hatchery with the materials needed for its saddle. It takes about 12-24 in-game hours to incubate. When it’s done, you can hatch it and meet your new friend! You’ll also need to build a Nest for your Buggy to live in.
Meet Your Buggies: The Early Access Roster 👋
Early Access has two Buggies, each with a special job.
- The Red Soldier Ant (The Workhorse) 💪🐜This is the first Buggy you’ll get, and it’s a fantastic all-around helper.
- Role: The Ant is perfect for hauling tons of resources and clearing paths, making it a must-have for any big building project.
- Abilities: It can carry up to 12 big items like Grass Planks at once! Its strong jaws can chew through ‘Dead Root’ barricades to open new paths. It can even recruit a friendly Red Worker Ant to fight with you. Plus, you can use your building menu while riding it!
- Unlock: You’ll unlock the Red Soldier Ant by doing the “Egg Hunt” story mission.
- The Orb Weaver (The Predator) 🕸️🕷️The Orb Weaver is a combat mount you’ll unlock later. It’s built for fighting and navigating tricky, web-covered areas.
- Role: This Buggy is a pure fighter and a specialized traversal tool. It’s not for hauling, but it’s great in a fight and can get you to high-up places.
- Abilities: It can shoot webs to trap enemies and roar to scare away smaller bugs. Its best trick is being able to run at full speed on webs, letting you cross web bridges and reach new heights. It also has a super high jump!
- Unlock: You’ll get the Orb Weaver after finishing the “Networking” mission, which is the end of the current Early Access story.
Buggy Care and Mechanics ❤️🩹
Buggies are tough, but they aren’t invincible. If a Buggy’s health hits zero, it gets knocked down, and you have 90 seconds to revive it. If you don’t make it in time, it goes back to its Nest and you can’t summon it for five minutes. On the hardest difficulty, “Woah! Mode,” this death is permanent! 😬
You can own multiple Buggies but only have one active at a time. You can whistle to call your active Buggy to you.
Table: Buggy Comparison and Crafting 🛠️
Here’s a quick look at the Buggies and what you need to make them.
Feature | Red Soldier Ant 🐜 | Orb Weaver 🕷️ |

Chapter 7: Advanced Survival Scenarios 🏆
Once you’ve got the basics down, it’s time to think about advanced strategies for different playstyles and the park’s toughest fights.
The Lone Survivor: Strategies for Solo Players 🚶
Playing solo is a tough but rewarding challenge. You have to be a jack-of-all-trades.
- Build Philosophy: A versatile, hybrid build is your best bet. A weapon with lifesteal, like the Mosquito Needle, is a lifesaver since you have no one to revive you.
- Combat Tactics: Use your Buggy as a combat partner to draw attention. Also, use the environment! Stand on high rocks where ground bugs can’t reach you.
- Resource Management: Be efficient! Build your base near a Ranger Station. Use Trail Markers to mark important resources so you can find them again easily.
Stronger Together: Co-op Team Dynamics 🤝
Grounded 2 is awesome with friends! Teamwork makes the dream work.
- The Power of Roles: Having assigned roles can make your team super effective. A classic team might have:
- One Warrior (tank) 🛡️
- Two DPS players (Ranger and Rogue) ⚔️🏹
- One Support player (builder, crafter, debuffer) 🛠️
- Synergistic Builds: Combine your abilities! Have one player weaken a boss’s defense while another reduces its damage. Then have the DPS players go all out! Or have a Mage slow a whole group of enemies with Chill ❄️ so a Warrior can easily stun-lock them.
- Shared Worlds: If your group can’t always play at the same time, use the “Shared World” feature. This lets trusted friends host the game even when the owner is offline, so you can all keep making progress.
Fortress Architecture: Advanced Base Building & Defense 🏰
Building a safe base is key, but the main threat in Early Access, O.R.C. Raids, is a little tricky. The raids target you, not your base, and enemies can sometimes spawn right inside your walls!
The best strategy is to lead the raid away from your main base. When you get a raid warning, run to a separate, heavily fortified “arena” you’ve built just for fighting. This way, your important crafting stations and storage stay safe.
Defensive structures are still useful, though! Here are some tips:
- Turret Placement: Put turrets on high platforms so they have a clear shot.
- Covering Blind Spots: Use angled roof pieces on the edge of a wall to let a turret aim downwards and protect the base of your walls.
Boss Battle Blueprints (Spoiler-Free Mechanics) 💥
Early Access has two big boss fights. Here’s how to beat them.
- Masked Stranger & Bandit 🎭This is the final battle of the “Networking” story quest.
- Phase 1 & 2 (Masked Stranger): She’s fast and uses a spicy sword, so she’s weak to Fresh damage ❄️. Learn to parry her combos and dodge her fiery blast. Use the pillars in the room for cover.
- Phase 3 (Bandit the Wolf Spider): After you deal with the Stranger, she calls her pet wolf spider, Bandit. It’s super venomous, so the Mithridatism mutation is a huge help. Bandit is weak to Spicy damage 🔥. Kite it around the pillars to stay safe.
- AXL (Tarantula Boss) 🕷️AXL is a huge, optional tarantula boss in the Pine Hill area.
- Core Mechanic: AXL has a massive 75% damage resistance. You can’t just hit it. You have to build up its stun meter by perfect blocking and using high-stun weapons. When it’s stunned, it falls over, and you can climb on its back to hit a glowing weak spot for huge damage.
- Strategy: This fight is all about endurance. Use a high-stun weapon like a club and the Smasher mutation. Avoid Stabbing or Fresh weapons. In its final phase, it will try to eat smaller bugs to heal. You can trick AXL into pouncing on and killing these adds for you!
